We have reached another week of our Summer Travel Series and I wanted to address a question that as someone who frequently travels, I get a lot. Why should I travel? This is such a loaded question because there are millions of answers to this question. I think when we all hit a certain age, we start to worry about life and try to cram in as much as we can before we are gone. It is never too late to start traveling, it is never to late to reinvent your life. If you feel stuck you can fix that you never have to feel like you can’t do something. This is your life and if you want to do something you should go and do it. I think if I didn’t start to travel I would have never learned that. Here are some of the things that I have learned from traveling that I feel like everyone can benefit from.
Culture is something that I think everyone has taken advantage of in their lifetime. It is important to embrace your culture and the culture of others. Culture is defines as The customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group also : the characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time. I think experiencing other cultures is what makes us kinder to the world and kinder to ourselves.
Right off of Culture there is also seeing the way that people from other places live their every day life. Some places are so vastly different from the place you are from that the people have an entire different routine. You will find that some places that are so far away, that you would think do things the most different, actually have a pretty similar routine to you. I think that when you experience the way other people live it makes you a more well rounded human.
This is a huge one. It is probably my number one answer when someone asks me why they should travel? One word …FOOD. With all of the different culinary excursions and experiences the world has to offer this is one of the most important reasons you should travel. I am a believer that food brings us all together. The best conversations are started around a dinner table and when traveling, the best new conversations are started.
Traveling challenges yourself. You might feel stuck, need a vacation, or need an adventure. You might be afraid to leave a place that is harrowing on you. You might crave a new experience. Travel allows you to test your limits, to let your hair loose, to get you out of your comfort zone.
Traveling has made me appreciate what I have in life. It makes me realize how truly lucky I am. In everyday life it is easy to loose sight of what you have. Exploring places unknown will give you the appreciation for the place you live and appreciation for your life.
In closing life is too short to not see the moon and the sun rise on the other side of the world. Know that you can always make more money, you can always do the small things. I think back on my life and it would be so different if I didn’t travel. Also know that travel doesn’t have to be far and that even traveling to the next state over will teach you so much about the place, and yourself.
